Capri
Capri has always been something of a paradise for pleasure-seekers. Among the first
to be captivated by it's beauty were the Romans. Augustus visited Capri on his return
to Italy from his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra; instantly taken by it's beauty.
He then exchanged the island for Ischia which was already in his possession.
The centre of Capri town is small, chic and quaint with little white houses, cobbled
passageways and where some of the most exclusive designers have boutiques If you
are not interested in these, you can visit the Duomo built in the 17th Century and
the Gardens of Augustus. The Villa Jovis, a 45 minutes walk from the town, was the
home of the Emperor Tiberius toward the end of his reign. Combine a visit to the
ruins with a grim Salto di Tiberio, the cliff from which the emperor was supposed
to have flung his enemies.
The little town of Anacapri is known for Villa San Michele, immortalised by Axel
Munthe in the Story of San Michele Of great natural beauty are the Grotta Azzurra
and the Faraglioni – take a boat from Marina Grande.
